Manager SAP Basis(2.7 TB DB, 3 teams, 25 technicians) 2002-2003

  • Managed the Sun relationship (including detailed problem analysis and technical diagnosis) in a major effort to correct server CPU problems during extremely high visibility SAP outage scenarios

  • Maintained customer service relationship with SAP business units through daily status meetings, and ongoing inclusion in planning sessions for new implementations.

  • Project Manager on Middleware upgrade that involved new software (Tuxedo, AltaVista Search, Mercator, Webmethods). Managed cross-functional and cross-departmental teams on multiple projects requiring extensive communications, analysis and planning for middleware which interfaces between corporate systems and www.Grainger.com.

  • Managed SAP Disaster Recovery Architecture via company wide Disaster Recovery Planning Strategy.

Manager Data Base Services (2 teams, 20 technicians) 2001-2002

  • Directly lead a major effort to improve the performance of a DB2, UDB, and Oracle Data Warehouse, Data Mart environment. Successfully communicating activities to User Departments and Executive Management.

  • Cleaned up Oracle Software licensing for compliance and license “reuse” ability through detailed inventory and negotiations saving thousands of dollars.

Manager UNIX Services (400 Servers, 3 teams, 40 technicians) 1999-2001

  • Project Manager in major project to make the Sun Solaris Systems, Y2K compliant. This was a last minute effort, again with zero failures during implementation.

  • Directed the implementation of UNIX Server and EMC Disk Statistics online for upper management technical visibility into the systems (via intranet).

  • Re engineered the UNIX Administration teams to provide for improved ability to support their systems. This was done through team restructuring, improved online system status, improved documentation and turning over operational responsibilities to the appropriate responsible teams.

  • Managed and dismissed Sun consulting services from engagement, picking up their responsibilities with no increase in the UNIX Administration staff.

Manager Mainframe Software (annual software budget of 10M) 1995-1999

  • Reduced Computer Associates software maintenance costs by $750,000 annually, through software cleanup and contract negotiations.

  • Reduced IBM mainframe software charges by $1.5 million annually through contract negotiations and IBM PSLC (Parallel Sysplex License Charge) implementation.

  • Strategic Architecture Committee member authoring presentations about Mainframe Standards, and the future of the Mainframe at Grainger.

  • Stepped into an ongoing project to make the Mainframe Operating system Y2K compliant, with no implementation failures at all (a first at Grainger for a Mainframe upgrade).

  • Introduced the Mainframe technical and management staff to support the non-mainframe functions of SMTP, DNS, NAV, TAO Email, UNIX and Middleware, all while still performing the Mainframe Systems Programmer role.
